Liz Reid and I kicked off the start of the “CHURCH TOUR” today at Saint Rose of Lima……….pretty little church……couple of surprises…….a couple of people kneeled to take communion, there was a prayer in LATIN in the middle of the mass, and then at the end was a prayer everyone knew by heart about being on the lookout and ridding the world of Satan…………we were the ONLY 2 who did not know that little added ending!!
Who knew we would land in Newtown?….on the Day of the Holy Innocents…..it is the day that commemorates King Herod’s command to kill all male children under the age of 2. To protect their child, Jesus, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt…….I am sure the parents of Newtown would have fled anywhere to protect their children if only they knew how close danger was to their children.
Two weeks ago at Northeast Community Church – the sermon was focused on King Herod’s perspective….his personal world was flipped upside down when the “new baby king” was born…..the service was all about new expectations in our own personal world and in our families. I needed to hear that since new changes were in store for me to get through the holidays….family dynamics, Steph married, Vinnie’s Dad gone…..nothing compared to Herod’s world, but certainly different….the families of Newtown are onto their 2nd year of “upside down expectations”………the simplicity of the church was kind of reassuring.
Last week at NECC – the sermon was about the Birth of Christ from Joseph’s point of view…a young man with a pregnant teenaged wife…giving birth to the Messiah…..his responsibilities in a new dynamic with new expectations……yesterday I thought about what the father’s felt in Newtown….I look at things often from the mother’s point of view…..but the dad’s must have felt like they had failed their families is some sad way….
St Rose of Lima had 2 angels in every window with a piece of evergreen above them…very simple, very pretty.
Ironically, 2 years ago I kicked off my CT WINERY TOUR in Newtown as well!!
