Saturday, November 1, 2014 – Sacred Heart Parish – Greenwich, CT

On a grey, drizzly night, I decided to head out to Greenwich….kind of at the last minute.

I was glad I did. The church was beautiful – very pretty.
The priest was talking about All Soul’s Day and the notion of TIME vs. TIMELESSNESS. It was a cool concept in linking it to the timelessness of our souls that live in our earthly bodies so directly connected to time. He was very interesting and posed ideas that would make me think about how often our lives are tied to moments of time. We never seem to have enough time, or we have too much time on our hands, or time goes too quickly, or time drags on. These are phrases we often hear, and above all else our time on this earth is limited. In the spiritual sense though, our time is timeless. He ended his service by saying that we can’t imagine timelessness as a concept of eternity. Our minds cannot wrap themselves around “eternity”. We don’t have the mental capacity to comprehend eternity because we live our lives measured in time. A concept manufactured by man.

Time is such an interesting notion to think about.

During the Mass, we sang On Eagles’ Wings. I think it was a tribute to All Soul’s Day. But I have such an issue with that. This song was played at my wedding!! To me, it is a wedding song…a song about living. I have LOVED the image of Vinnie and I being held up in our marriage, our friendship, our relationship, our parenting, etc…..in the “palm of His hand” and protected by angels.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in His shadow for life
Say to the Lord
“My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!”

And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you
And famine will bring you no fear
Under His wings your refuge
His faithfulness your shield.

And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

You need not fear the terror of the night
Nor the arrow that flies by day
Though thousands fall about you
Near you it shall not come.

And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

For to His angels He’s given a command
To guard you in all of your ways
Upon their hands they will bear you up
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand…

The phrase I love the most is the following: For to His angels He’s given a command To guard you in all of your ways; Upon their hands they will bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone.

That to me is a beautiful phrase that I love! It is a song of being protected while you LIVE…..to me anyhow!!

  1. That is exactly WHY we sing this song at funerals. As catholics, when we die, we move on to eternal life with God. The body dies, but the soul LIVES forever with God.
